Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology lies in the history-honored cultural city of Xi'an £¬ with the world famous Big Wild Goose Pagoda of theTang Dynasty in the south and the magnificent City Wall of the Ming Dynasty in the north. The beautiful campus covers a total area of 3,100,000 m 2 (approx. 900,000 m 2 floor area) with very convenient transportation.

XAUAT is a multi-disciplinary university of higher learning, with the specialties of Engineering, Science, Arts, Law, Management etc. There are all together 16 departments offering 45 undergraduate major fields. Among them, Architecture and Civil engineering have a long history. Besides, Metallurgy, Material Science, Computer Science, and Information and Auto-designing are also provided. XAUAT has become one of the most outstanding architectural universities in the country.

There are 97 teaching & research offices, 43 laboratories and 42 research institutes. Among them, the Institute of Powder Engineering is a national technology research and promotion center which studies the new dry process of suspension preheating and precalcining used in the cement industry. The Institute of Architecture Design and the Institute of Urban Planning are two of the best state design institutes. The Institute of Construction Design is the second class state construction design institue. The university's library has a collection of more than 2,000,000 books and 4,500 journals and periodicals both in Chinese and in foreign languages. The campus is now fully wired for broad band internet. In addition, there is also an audio-visual education center, a computer center, an information network center, a gymnasium and a 40,000 m 2 track field.

At present, there are more than 2,100 teaching staff in the University. One has obtianed the title of academician in the Chinese Academy of Engineering and more than 700 teachers are professors or associate professors. There are more than 26,000 undergraduate students in the university, and 3,600 students are in pursuit of their masters or doctorate degrees.

2 national key disciplinary subjects and 7 departmental key disciplinary subjects are offered in the university. In addition, it has a national science and technology research and popularization center, 3 departmental project and technology research and popularization centers, and 5 national key laboratories. In addition, the university is one of the first higher institutions authorized by the State Council to confer doctor's degree (19 academic subjects), master's degree (54 specialties) and bachelor's degrees. Moreover, there are 4 post-doctoral research stations for Architecture, Civil engineering, Environmental science and engineering and Material science and engineering. Vocational schools and other institutes also provide opportunities for continuous education .

The university pays much attention to both the quality of teachers and quality of students. A lot of measures have been taken to keep up with the needs of market, for example £¬ major and minor credit are offered at the same time and flexibility of graduation is provided, and what's more many kinds of scholarship are offered. The pride of the school also lies in the fact that the students won more than 10 awards in the International Contest of Designing. For five times,the students majoring in architecture have won prizes in the "International Architecture Designing Contest of College Students" which was organized by UNESCO and the International Architecture Association. In the 14 th contest, they won the highest prize awarded by UNESCO. In 1999, our university successfully organized the 20 th UIA International Architecture Convention for designing contest of college students which was also independently organized by college for the first time in history and in Asia. In the past few years, our university took up the tasks of designing the Emperor Mausoleum and the study of ocher altiplano green construction system, the technique of suspension preheat ing and precalcining with high solid-gas mass ratio, research of non-toxic gold leaching which were the key state designing tasks which tackle  key and sutle problems. All these have obtained a high level of science and technology achievement and gained a nationwide reputation for our university.

In the past few years, both the matriculation ratio for the first choice of our university and the ratio of employment after graduation has been at a high level among all universities in China .

Now XAUAT has also kept extensive academic contact with a lot of international institutions, such as Kyushu University, Nihon University , Wollongong University , Old Dominion University , Ecole National Superieure Architecture et de Pays age de Bordeaux , Kiev Institute of Construction Engineering , Sunchon National University , and Norwegian University of Science and Technology .

For about fifty years, XAUAT has trained more than 50,000 talents who are both academically and morally qualified. And they actively involve themselves in the economic development and construction of China. Our aim is "cultivating talent, developing the economy and enriching people with science and technology". And we also advocate "Independence, Realism, Inquisitiveness and Creativity". Now the whole university is striving to become one of the nationally and internationally renowned universities.

Undergraduate Program

Undergraduate education of XAUAT aims at training graduates of high quality with specialized knowledge within a certain area. With a goal of true education for people, XAUAT trains and teaches students who would pursue truth and academic excellence, practice righteousness, share their own ideas with people and dedicate themselves to China's construction and human progress. The students are taught with a solid foundation, a wide range of knowledge, a high talent and a creative mind. Much effort has been put to the growth of students' comprehensive quality as well as basic education, such as science and culture. XAUAT educates and sends out graduates equipped with important experience through various on-the-job training in strengthened program of educational-industrial cooperation. With the combination of academic experiment and social practice, their creative mind and innovation ability have been well developed.

To seek survival by improving the quality of education and instruction, XAUAT has in recent years launched two important projects: the New Century Quality Project and Creative Project, and steady progress has been made in improving the quality of undergraduate education. More than 30 prizes were won for Excellent Teaching Results at both the state and provincial levels. Among its undergraduate majors, architecture, urban planning, civil engineering and environmental engineering have already been labeled as the Well-Established Specialties in the universities of Shaanxi Province.

Since high-qualified faculty makes the foundation of higher education, many effective measures have been taken to build a team of first-class scholars. These measures include "Lecture Contest for Young Teachers" which is held twice a year, "New Teaching star", etc. In addition, famed professors are encouraged not only to give lectures for postgraduates but also for undergraduates. All these have contributed to the steady progress in the quality of teaching.

Efforts will continuously focus on educational reform and innovation. In recent years, XAUAT has practiced flexible credit¨Csystem and bilingual lectures (both in Chinese and English) are given to students of almost all majors. Moreover, several prizes have been set up, aiming at awarding and encouraging more excellent students.

By generations' effort, XAUAT has developed into a multi-disciplinary university, with the specialties of architecture and civil engineering as its special feature, science and engineering as the main body and liberal arts, law, management science and art as inclusive specialties.
